Therapy

We can hardly turn a blind eye to our shopping methods and the impact it has on the world around us. The realization that the clothes in my closet were a part of the ongoing struggle is terrifying. That knowledge can be suffocating -- I get crushed under the weight of my conscience. The temporary surge in serotonin is quickly countered with the bruises to the well-being of the world and ourselves.

There is an inevitable fear that arises when we start to think about the consequences of our actions. Many of us know the constant torment to the earth we engage in daily, but it is so much easier for us to excuse harm to the earth by healing ourselves. Many of us spend to cope. Yet, we never seem to question the retail therapy paradox - we expect to lessen our pain by simply looking for more.

I have begun to reflect on my spending habits, and also how distancing myself from effortless fast fashion purchases brought different pockets of joy into my life. I began to realize how going thrifting was an opportunity to find new creative outlets and opportunities to “turn trash into treasure.” I started to look at clothing swaps with my friends in a new way and found value in how sharing clothes led to sharing memories. More recently I started purchasing from sustainable retailers and even a reusable bag serves as a small affirmation that I am contributing to something bigger. I have found peace in these small substitutes for reckless consumption as I realize that I can redefine “new.” I can give to myself while also giving back to the world around me.

Being wrapped up in the trend of materialism comes with far too many consequences. These positive and productive changes have helped me stop the never ending cycle of consumption in my life. I feel more connected to the planet and to myself.

And so, I encourage you, if you buy, buy better. Protect your heart and protect our planet.
